Siamo nell'Italia del 2008, ma le libere idee possono evidentemente ancora ammazzare. Ancora più tragica è la constatazione che tutto ciò accade a Napoli e dintorni. Vi racconto brevemente la storia di Roberto Saviano (grazie a La Stampa online da cui l'ho tratta), autore di un libro best-seller, tradotto in 33 lingue nel mondo, un successo così enorme ed inaspettato tale da indurre la Camorra dei Casalesi a minacciarlo seriamente di morte.
It’s Italy, year 2008, but evidently ideas can still kill. Even more tragic is the fact that these things happen in Naples and the surrounding area. Here’s the story in brief of Roberto Saviano (thanks to La Stampa online, an Italian newspaper, from which I took it), author of a best-seller book, translated in 33 languages worldwide, a so huge and unexpected success that lead Camorra of Casalesi (a Camorra group that ‘rules’ the town of Casal di Principe, near Caserta) to seriously threaten him to death.

E' il maggio 2006: il libro di un semisconosciuto scrittore campano esce nelle librerie, con una tiratura di appena 5000 copie. Ma «Gomorra» attira la gente: in pochissimo tempo vende migliaia di copie. E' la sua natura ibrida ad affascinare: romanzo e documentario, narrazione e fredda descrizione realistica, il libro di Saviano svela agli occhi degli italiani un fenomeno fino ad allora poco conosciuto. It’s May 2006: the book of an unkown Neapolitan writer arrives in bookstores, with a circulation of 5000 copies only. But "Gomorrah" attracts the people: very quickly it sells thousands of copies. It is its hybrid nature that is fascinating: novel and documentary, narrative and cold realistic description, Saviano's book reveals the mind of an Italian phenomenon not completely known. E' il settembre 2006, «Gomorra» è già un successo ma non così enorme come poi si rivelerà. Roberto è a Casal di Principe per presentare il suo libro durante l'inaugurazione dell'anno scolastico. E lì, nella terra dei boss, lancia un durissimo attacco contro il «Sistema»: «Schiavone, Iovine, Zagaria: non valete niente. 
Ragazzi, pronunciate i loro nomi anche qui: non sono di questa terra, la stuprano, la usano. Cacciateli». Il discorso di Roberto stupisce, affascina ma fa anche infuriare: da quel momento la vita di Saviano cambierà per sempre.
The speech in Casal di Principe
September 2006, "Gomorrah" is already a success but not as huge as it will be then. Roberto is in Casal di Principe to present his book during the inauguration of the school year. And there, in the land of the ‘boss’ (Camorra’s leaders), he launches a huge attack against the 'system': "Schiavone, Iovine, Zagaria (some of the main Camorra’s bosses): you are nothing. Boys, shout their names here, too: they have nothing in common with this land, they only rape it, they only use it. Kick them away”. The speech by Roberto surprised, fascinated but also lead people to rage: from that moment Saviano's life will change forever.
La scorta
E' il 13 ottobre 2006: «Gomorra» sta diventando un caso letterario e Saviano il simbolo della resistenza ai clan, soprattutto dopo il discorso di Casal di Principe. La grande tensione che si crea, però, attorno alla persona di Roberto spinge l'allora Ministro degli Interni, Giuliano Amato, a mettere Roberto sotto scorta e ad allontanarlo per precauzione da Napoli. Inizia quel giorno una vita sotto scorta che dura da due anni:«Ricordo la telefonata allarmata di un ufficiale dei carabinieri - ha raccontato Saviano a proposito dell'inizio della sua vita sotto scorta – Un collaboratore di giustizia aveva segnalato il pericolo. Non tutti erano dalla mia parte, dalla parte dela legalità - dice ancora Saviano - Ricordo che quando uscii di casa circondato dai carabinieri, ci fu qualcuno che mi sibilò alle spalle: "finalmente t'hanno arrestato!" Saviano oggi ha 29 anni e dice di essersi allontanato da tutti: «anche da parte di quelli che mi erano vicino c'era una sorta di rimprovero, come se dicessero "ci siamo presi degli schiaffi in faccia per te, per difendere uno spettro"».
The escort
October 13th, 2006: "Gomorrah" is becoming a literary event and Saviano the symbol of resistance to the ‘clan’ (another word to generally define groups of Camorra people), especially after the speech of Casal di Principe. The great tension that is growing not against Camorra but around the person of Roberto, pushes the Internal Affairs Minister, Giuliano Amato, to put Roberto under protection and away from Naples as a precaution. So he began a life under police protection that lasts for two years: "I remember the phone call where an alarmed carabiniere (Carabinieri are an Italian Army police) - Saviano told about this - A ‘Justice collaborator’ had pointed out the danger (when someone guilty decides to collaborate with Police to discover other guilty people, he’s defined ‘Justice collaborator’ and also a ‘repentant’). Not everyoneon my side, on the side of the law - says Saviano - I remember that when I got out of my house surrounded by carabinieri, there was someone behind me murmuring: "They finally arrested you!". Saviano is now 29 years old and he says he’s far away from everyone, "there was a kind of reproach even from those who were near me, as if to say ‘we have taken slaps in our face for you, just to defend a ghost!’”.

«Gomorra» diventa un caso letterario mondiale: Saviano parte per lunghi tour editoriali per presentare il libro, tradotto in più di trenta lingue, in tutto il mondo. Il «New York Times», nel dicembre 2007, inserisce «Gomorra» nella lista dei 100 libri più belli dell'anno. Roberto Saviano diventa famosissimo, un simbolo della resistenza ai clan che tutti vogliono intervistare o avere in studio: il rapporto con i mass media sarà sempre difficile.
Success
"Gomorrah" became a worldwide literary event: Saviano leaves for long publishing tour to present the book, translated into over thirty languages worldwide (33 up to now). In December 2007 the New York Times put "Gomorrah" in the list of the 100 best books of the year. Roberto Saviano became famous, a symbol of resistance to clans that everyone wants to interview or have in the TV studio: relationship with mass media will always be difficult.
Il film
Al Festival di Cannes del 2008 viene ufficialmente presentato «Gomorra», il film del regista italiano Matteo Garrone tratto dal libro di Saviano. Nel cast, oltre all'attore napoletano Toni Servillo, anche molti ragazzini provenienti dai quartieri più difficili di Napoli. Il film piace subito, anche se è un vero e proprio pugno nello stomaco: vince il Gran Premio della Giuria a Cannes e viene scelto dall'Anica come film italiano in concorso agli Oscar.
The movie
At the Cannes Film Festival 2008 'Gomorrah' is officially presented, a movie by Italian director Matteo Garrone taken from the book by Saviano. In the cast, in addition to Neapolitan actor Toni Servillo, a lot kids coming from the more dangerous suburbs of Naples. Everyone likes the movie, even if it’s a real punch in the stomach: it won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes and is chosen by the Italian film association for the Oscar competition.
Le ultime minacce
Dopo la strage di Castelvolturno, in cui rimasero uccisi sei immigrati, Roberto decide di tornare allo scoperto: scrive una lettera aperta in cui fa nomi, cognomi e indirizzi dei colpevoli e chiede ai campani di ribellarsi, di denunciare la loro realtà. Poco dopo un pentito del clan dei Casalesi, Carmine Schiavone, ha rivelato che i boss avevano pronto un piano per uccidere Saviano e la sua scorta entro Natale: sembra che Roberto non si libererà facilmente dei poliziotti che lo accompagnano ogni giorno della sua vita.
The latest threats
After the massacre of Castelvolturno (September 2008), where six immigrants were killed, Roberto decides to come back out: he writes an open letter in which he cites names and addresses of the killers and ask to people to rebel, to denounce the reality in which they live.Shortly after a repentant of the Casalesi clan, Carmine Schiavone, revealed that the boss had prepared a plan to kill Saviano and his escort before Christmas: it seems that Roberto won’t live without the policemen that accompany him every day of his life.

Dopo la fuga di notizie sul possibile attentato che avrebbe dovuto uccidere lui e la sua scorta entro Natale, Saviano ha deciso di allontanarsi dall'Italia, almeno per un certo periodo: «Penso di aver diritto a una pausa - ha detto lo scrittore - Ho pensato, in questo tempo, che cedere alla tentazione di indietreggiare non fosse una gran buona idea, non fosse soprattutto intelligente. 
Ho creduto che fosse assai stupido, oltre che indecente, rinunciare a se stessi, lasciarsi piegare da uomini di niente, gente che disprezzi per quel che pensa, per come agisce, per come vive, per quel che è nella più intima delle fibre ma, in questo momento, non vedo alcuna ragione per ostinarmi a vivere in questo modo, come prigioniero di me stesso, del mio libro, del mio successo. 'Fanculo il successo».
«Voglio una casa. Voglio innamorarmi, bere una birra in pubblico, andare in libreria e scegliermi un libro leggendo la quarta di copertina. Voglio passeggiare, prendere il sole, camminare sotto la pioggia, incontrare senza paura e senza spaventarla mia madre. Voglio avere intorno i miei amici e poter ridere e non dover parlare di me, sempre di me come se fossi un malato terminale e loro fossero alle prese con una visita noiosa eppure inevitabile. Cazzo, ho soltanto ventotto anni!».
"I have to leave Italy"
October 2008, present days. After this news about a possible attack, within Christmas, to him and his escort, Saviano has decided to move away from Italy, at least for some time: "I think I have the right to take a break - said the writer – during those moments I thought that yielding to the temptation to retreat was not a great idea, not particularly smart. I thought that it was really stupid, as well as indecent, giving up to myself, bent by men that are nothing, people that you despise for what they think, for the way they do things, for the way they live, for what they are in the most intimate part of their body, but at the moment, I see no reason to continue living in this way, as a prisoner of myself, of my book, of my success. Fuck success".
"I want a home. I want to get involved in love, I want to drink a beer in public, to go to the library and choose a book by reading the back cover. I want to walk, sunbathe, to walk in the rain, to meet my mother without fear and without frighten her. I want to have my friends around me and laugh with them not talking about me, still about me as if I was a terminal patient and they could be struggling for a tedious but inevitable visit to me. Shit, I’m only twenty-eight years old!"
Non ci sono parole per commentare. Il mio pensiero è che così è stato e così sarà sempre. La mia idea di Napoli come "ultima isola di salvezza per l’umanità" (quella di de Crescenzo di “Così parlò Bellavista”), purtroppo è svanita da tempo. Il sud è nelle mani sporche di questa gente, quelli perbene lasciano stare, mollano tutto e vanno a vivere altrove, come me, e chi resta sta affondando in un baratro.
There are no words to comment this. My thought is that this has been, and will always be. My idea of Naples as a "last island of salvation for mankind" (a citation from Neapolitan writer de Crescenzo’s movie/book "Thus Spoke Bellavista"), has unfortunately disappeared long ago. The South is in the dirty hands of these bad people, the respectable ones are leaving, they give up and go living elsewhere, like me, and the remaining good ones are sinking into a chasm.
